HIS HOLY NAME
GOD’S HOLY NAME
O Lord, my Lord how majestic is Your name in all the earth! (Pslam 8:1a)
As a child growing up in a faithful Catholic family I was trained by priests, nuns, and parents never to use the names of God in vain. It was a sin to be confessed and repented of and a mouth to be washed out with “Fells Napta” soap. I was further shown a consistent reverent example by my parents.
Our parish had a “Holy Name Society” which focused on the advancement of reverence for God’s name by setting aside one Sunday Mass each month where father and son would join in receiving communion to commemorate a pledge to revere His Holy Name. My father and two brothers, and I were attendees at these masses. A pledge was recited by those in attendance similar to the one I am encouraging below.
My reverence for God’s name escalated upon my acknowledging Christ as my personal Lord and Savior years later and learning from Scripture the many commands to reverence His holy name.
I am eternally grateful to my parents, priest, and nuns for the formation in me of this love and respect for God’s Holy Name. Please join me in taking this pledge and promoting it among your family and friends.

Christian Holy Name Pledge
Blessed be God.
Hallowed be His Holy Name
Blessed be Jesus Christ true God and true man.
Blessed be the name of Jesus.
I pledge myself against
Blasphemy, profanity and obscene speech.
I pledge never to use the name God, Jesus, or any derivative thereof in a less than praiseworthy manner.
I further promise to defend the names of God and Jesus, publicly and privately, especially when I hear His Holy Name defamed. I will do so by speaking the truth about His Holy Name in a loving way to the offending party. And will commit to lifting the offender in prayer.
You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.(Ex 20:7a)
Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD shall surely be put to death. All the congregation shall stone him. The sojourner as well as the native, when he blasphemes the Name, shall be put to death. Lev. 24:16
